Tabuena, who was one of the top amateur golfers of the country before turning professional in 2011, qualified by topping the US Open sectional qualifiers in Daly City, California. Tabuena, who is currently no. 117 in the world rankings, scored 132 (68, 64) to have a 2 shot lead over Mark Aguanio, Justin Suh and Gregor Main.

Aguanio, Suh and Main also qualified, together with Tyler Raber and Brandon Harkins.
As of the writing, Tabuena is one of only 10 Asians who qualified for the tournament. The other Asian countries represented are India (1), Japan (5) and South Korea (3).
