rafa santos gives bad comments about theater actors

rafa santos, a 26 year old film maker, gave a bad comment on why he casts theater actors in his movies during an interview in anc.

here is the video:

writing it in verbatim, he said "... I find the theater actors are better to work with because they don’t complain; you can feed them Sky Flakes three meals a day, and pay them in cat food."

after this incident, an open letter surfaced in facebook from theater actor joel trinidad of upstart productions to the cinemalaya, where his short film "samarito" is included in the film festival. here is a copy of the open letter:

Independent filmmaker Rafa Santos needs to be taught a lesson. Not a lesson in filmmaking, as he is obviously competent enough to have been included in this year’s Cinemalaya. Not a lesson in thrift, as he is apparently frugal enough to have produced his film without major backing. Not a lesson in public speaking, as he can definitely hold his own in interviews about the film in question. No, what this man needs is a lesson in gratitude. (He would also do well to acquire some class.)

In a televised interview on ANC this morning, Mr. Santos said he preferred using theater actors in his films, because “you can feed them Sky Flakes three meals a day and pay them in cat food.”

Congratulations, Mr. Santos. You have succeeded in alienating the very actors that have helped you to make your film so cheaply. No theater performer who has heard your egregious statements will ever work with you now. (Apparently, you lack not just gratitude, but also intelligence.)

Mr. Santos doubtless meant his remarks as a joke, but that does not excuse him from having made them. He is insensitive, mean-spirited, and divisive—qualities that do not become the artistic institution that Cinemalaya has become. We would appreciate it if you removed his film from your festival.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely yours,

Joel Trinidad

the glee project: emily is the third person not called back

emily vasquez, 22 year old girl from new york became the third aspirant not to be called back on the new reality show the glee project.

the week's theme is vulnerability. for their homework assignment, they were given lines in the song please don't live me by pink. to judge them in this, the guest judge for the week is dot marie jones who plays coach beiste in the hit show glee. after the performance, she said that lindsay comes out as forced. she enjoyed emily's and matheus' performance. in the end, dot choose matheus as the winner this week. this is matheus' second win in three challenges.

the week's video is tears for fears' mad world. they need to choose words that they are very much insecure about and put it out there in public. they will display these words while walking on universal city walk.

the words they choose are as follows:

alex - gay
cameron - misunderstood
damian - numb
hannah - fat
lindsay - fake
marissa - flawed
samuel - rejected
matheus - small
mckynleigh - black or white
emily - used

it was a very emotional shoot. as they are being shot, the other contestants watched them in a monitor. emily revealed that she has been abused by music producers that is why she choose used. while alex was shooting, marissa decided to change her word since it was not specific on the issues she had before. she changed it to "annorexic".

here is the music video for the week:

in the end, the contestants in the bottom three were damian, cameron and emily. damian and cameron was called out due to their lack of connection to the song. emily was called due to her lack of focus during the shoot. they were asked to sing the following songs:

damian - are you lonesome tonight by elvis presley
cameron - your song by elton john
emily - grenade by bruno mars

it was a pretty tough week since all did a good job in their last chance auditions. but in the end, it was emily's lack of focus that made her not get the call back.

pilipinas got talent season 2: marcelito pomoy is the grand champion

marcelito pomoy, the singer from cavite, was declared the grand champion of the second season of pilipinas got talent. marcelito, who performs with both a female and male voice and sang the song the prayer during the performance night yesterday, bested 13 other grand finalists for the title. marcelito took home 2 million pesos in cash as his prize.

here is marcelito's performance during the performance night:

second place went to the tap dancing duo happy feet of bukidnon. third place went to laguna's pride, the dancing group freestylers. marcelito got 19.56% of the votes, with happy feet close behind with 18.32%. freestylers got 9.46% of the votes.

the other finalists were djp trio, john michael narag, b4, rico the magician, madrigal siblings, filogram, buildex pagales, nielbeth, jem cubil, skeights and angel calalas.

the 11 finalists not in the top three received 50,000 pesos in cash from head and shoulders.

next week will be a special featuring the 14 grand finalists. pilipinas got talent season 3 will premiere immediately on july 9.

star magic's 19th anniversary musice video: ikaw and magic ng buhay ko

here is star magic's 19th anniversay music video, ikaw ang magic ng buhay ko. the song is composed by yeng constantino. the music video premiered this afternoon in asap.

pilipinas got talent season 2: who will win tonight?

after last night's performance night, who will be the second grand champion of pilipinas got talent? as we all know, the winner will be decided via votes (text and online) so there will be a lot of factors to be considered in predicting who the winner will be.

first consideration was last night's performance. you need to have a great and entertaining performance last night to get the attention of the voting public. based on my live blog last night, here are my scores for each of the performances in a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the perfect score:

9 - freestylers, marcelito pomoy, nielbeth
8.5 - happy feet, rico the magician, madrigal siblings,
8 - filogram, buildex pagales, angel calalas
7.5 - john michael narag, skeights
7 - b4, jem cubil,
6 - djp trio

the three acts with the 9 really wowed us with a great performance and gave us something out of the box. the freestylers gave us jaw dropping stunts one after another after another. marcelito was simply outstanding with his one man duet and hot a standing ovation not only from the judges but also from the araneta crowd. nielbeth's routine was flawless and was really good. these three has an upperhand in this criteria.

the second criteria is group size. as we know, the filipinos are very fond of voting for their own family members due to our close family ties and friends tends to stick with friends no matter what. the more members you have, the more sure votes you have. so in this case, the largest group is freetylers, followed by skeights, filogram and b4.

the third criteria is the early fan base. if you had a good exposure during the auditions and the semifinals, the better chances you have. this is because you already have a solid fan base. so who benefits from this? marcelito is definitely one. his youtube hits is really way above the others. another is buildex, who has the most number of fan pages in facebook. happy feet also has an advantage in this criteria. another act that can be considered here is angel calalas and b4. their revelations on their affinity to season 1 contenders (angel is the sister of the velasco brothers and b4 has 2 members who performed with baguio metamorphosis in season 1) might get the fans of the season 1 alumni to vote for them.

the fourth criteria is the performer's place of origin. filipinos have a great sense of kababayan and they will vote for someone who comes from or is from a place near his own place. on the disadvantage in this criteria is the 2 acts from baguio (b4 and filogram); 2 acts from negros (djp trio and nielbeth) and the 2 acts from rizal (madrigal siblings and angel calalas). they would split the hometown votes.

the fifth criteria is looks and charm. we all know that filipinos like to see beautiful faces on tv and tend to vote for the ones with the best looks. so who has the charms to win? it would definitely be jem cubil leading among the guys and angel calalas among the female contenders.

the sixth criteria is uniqueness of the act. viewers wants to see something extraordinary, something they do not see often in television and on shows. so who are unique here? happy feet, rico the magician, hoop expert angel and marcelito are unique in their own way. tap dancing is not very popular in the philippines and happy feet gave us a glimpse on how beautiful this dance form is. marcelito is a deviation from the doble kara approach to his act. angel's hoop act is definitely something new and rico is the only magician since the semi-finals.

the last criteria but definitely not the least is the story behind each contestant. being in a reality show, the talent is not the only selling point that you have. you should have a sad story behind your performance. that is why filipinos like telenovelas, because they can easily relate to the problems and hardships of life. this makes you grounded and relateable. happy feet's life struggles and marcelito's search for his family definitely gives them an edge in this criteria. their stories has been highlighted since the auditions and the audience can clearly relate to their stories. the auddience also tends to vote for the person who needs the prize more.

so if you ask me who deserves to win after the performance night last night, i would definitely say it should be a toss up between freestylers, nielbeth and marcelito.

but considering all the criteria above, i think the contest will be between happy feet and marcelito pomoy. my dark horse will be buildex or rico the magician.

my fearless forecast? the winner will be marcelito pomoy.

so make sure that you will vote for your favorites. every vote counts.

pilipinas got talent season 2: vote for your favorites!

here is the video of the highlights of the performances of the 14 grand finalists and how to vote for each one of them:

please vote for your favorites! let's watch tonight as we crown the 2nd winner of pilipinas got talent.

live blog: pilipinas got talent grand finals performance night

will be live blogging the grand finals performance night of pilipinas got talent. stay tuned for updates as it happens live from araneta coliseum.

8:48pm - show time! opening spiel is currently on. videos of the finalists are being shown one by one.

8:51pm - opening number, the 14 finalists with host, billy crawford and nikki gil will be tonight's special co-host (luis has a previous commitment and will be back for the results night tomorrow)

9:05pm - judges are being introduced; kris, aiai and fmg

9:08pm - first finalists introduced, the freestylers of calamba city, laguna.

9:10pm - freestylers performs. what a way to start the show! a visual feast of bboy tricks and stunts. really hard to follow this act. some tricks were also done in the semi finals but most were really new tricks. but some landings were quite off but despite those, it was really amazing! the music was great but i don't like the costume. hope they used a better costume. hope laguna supports them. aiai said "hindi kayo tao, bakulaw kayo"; kris said "you defied gravity. lumipad kayo!".

my rating for freestylers: 9 out of 10.

9:15pm - second act, djp trio from negros occidental is introduced. i don't like the fact that the presence of the congressman was highlighted. please spare the show from political grandstanding.

9:18pm - djp trio performs. i didn't like their performance. they started shaky and wasn't able to recover. these girls are adorable and their costume is great. but unfortunately, their voices were not blending as well as it was during the auditions and the semifinals. fmg said that the first 2 performances were grand and jris said negros should vote because of the pride they brought to the province. no comments directly about their performance. sign that they didn't perform well.

my rating for djp trio: 6 out of 10

9:28pm - third act to perform: happy feet from bukidnon

9:30pm - happy feet performs. it was another great performance from this act. they are obviously the crowd favorite. the combination of their fast and slow steps are great and their synchronicity was really good. their bond as brothers are really seen in their act. aiai said that she is proud and happy that they are here in the finals. also good to note that the taps are more audible tonight as compared to before. fmg is still buffled on where they got the inspiration to tap dance. i am still not quite sure if the philippines is ready for tap dance or if tap dancing has a following here.

my rating for happy feet: 8.5 out of 10

9:39pm - 4th act introduced: john michael narag of pangasinan

9:41pm - john michael performs. he sings martin nievera's "kahit isang saglit". he again started a bit shaky. at some points, his voice is being overpowered by the band. his low notes were good but the high notes were quite not there. he was able to recover towards the end, specially on the short a capella part. but was that enough to get the title? kris and aiai said that they wanted to be in love again when they were listening. kris said that he has what it takes to be the next concert king. aiai said that he looks better now.

my rating for john michael narag: 7.5 out of 10

9:46pm - 5th act introduced: b4 from baguio city

9:48pm - b4 performs. still very entertaining. they maintained the entertainment value they had in the competition. i like the music but i think it was too fast for them. the speed did not showcase their snappy dance moves and they look like they were chasing the music. at some parts, they were not synchronized. it was also revealed that 2 of their members were also in baguio methamorphosis, the runner up in season 1. kris said that they look like they smell good and aiai liked the costumes. again, no direct comments on their performance. not a good sign.

my rating for b4: 7 out of 10

10:00pm - 6th act introduced: rico the magician from caloocan city

10:02pm - rico the magician performs. the start was a departure from his very happy performance. it was quite serious. he performed the assistant-on the-pole trick which was quite predictable. he then switched to the happy dancing performance nand performed some tricks he did before. he "caught" 2 geese which appeared out of nowhere. he ended the act by transforming the a geese to a 60lb snake. all judges were amazed. i was a bit dragged by the start and i enjoyed his previous performances. i missed his dogs!

my rating for rico the magician: 8.5 out of 10

10:14pm - 7th act introduced: madrigal siblings from rizal

10:16pm - madrigal siblings perform. i think they are the best among the 3 singers that have performed so far. their voices were really great and the blending was there. another nationalistic song from them. i like the asymetrcal gown of one of the girls, very modern yet filipino. aiai was energized with their performance and kris remembered her parents.

my rating for madrigal siblings: 8.5 out of 10

10:25pm - 8th act introduced: marcelito pomoy of cavite

10:27pm - marcelito performs. i know that to level up his performance, he needs to show his male voice. and he definitely did what he needs to do with a great song, the prayer. he even sang a different language. he looks good and he got his family complete tonight. but i was expecting a more solid ending. kris said he wishes that he can be his wife and fmg said that he made cavite proud.

my rating for marcelito: 9 out of 10

10:33pm - 9th act introduced: filogram of baguio city

10:35pm - filogram performs. another entertaining number. as compared to b4, they performed more as a group and the fast music is really their forte. their synchronicity is very good and they look good. they also maximized the stage and their shiftings were also good. it was also revealed that one of them was sick and judge kris even gave him a kiss.

my rating for filogram: 8 out of 10

10:47pm - 10th act introduced: buildex pagales of digos city

10:49pm - buildex performs. he sings bruno mars' "lazy song". he started really well, with his cool voice and his guitar. when he put down the guitar, he started to sing and dance as well. he worked the stage but he was not able to hit some of his notes in the middle of the song. i think this is still his best performance in the competition. i also realized that he looks like jericho rosales at some angles and neil coleta at other angles. kris said that he is a star and fmg said he beats bruno mars.

my rating for buildex: 8 out of 10

10:59pm - 11th act introduced: dancing partners leoniel enopia and elizabeth dazo of bacolod city

11:01pm - nielbeth performs. they danced to jlo's let's get loud. another electrifying performance from them. i thought that it was hard to top their performance in the semi final but this was definitely better. their partnership was really great, the projection was great as well and the stunts and lifts were done almost perfectly. the costume change also was notable. they even got a standing ovation from aiai and kris.

my rating for nielbeth: 9 out of 10

11:11pm - 12th act introduced: jem cubil of cebu

11:13pm - jem performs, he sings when a man loves a woman. he starts unsure and shaky. he looks and sounded nervous. he picked up a bit when he started to play his guitar. i think the key is quite low for him but he also wasn't able to hit some of the high notes. it was a bit of a let down but his stage presence and charisma was still there. the judges commented more on his looks.

my rating for jem: 7 out of 10

11:17pm - 13th act introduced: skeights of davao

11:19pm - skeights performs. they perform liwanag sa dilim. i think they choose the wrong song for tonight. it did not showcase the vocalist's range. it was too low and the arrangement was quite slower than the original. i like their previous performances but this is a little less than what i expected. hope they still gain a contract after this show. it was also revealed that one of their guitars broke during rehearsals, and kris will replace the guitar!

my rating for skeights: 7.5 out of 10

11:30pm - last act introduced; angel calalas of cainta, rizal

11:32pm - angel performs, with one night only playing on the background. she did the same tricks she did on the semi finals, the hoops with fire, the hoop with fire while suspended on one hand and handled more than 15 hoops at the time. the new thing she did was she was hanged upside down and was spinned continuously. her ending wasn't great also.

my rating for angel: 8 out of 10

based on tonight's performance, the best performances were from freestylers, marcelito and neilbeth. not far behind are happy feet, rico the magician and madrigal siblings.

tomorrow will be the results show. please vote for your favorites. i will be live blogging the results night tomorrow. let's tune in tomorrow as we crown the second grand winner of pilipinas got talent.

the glee project: ellis becomes the 2nd contestant to be eliminated

ellis wylie, an 18 year old singer from grayslake, illinois; became the 2nd person who did not get a callback in the reality show, the glee project. this is the 2nd time that ellis was in the bottom three in as many weeks of the show. she was mainly voted off due to her negativity and her attitude.

in this episode, the focus is on the contestant's theatricality. this week's guest mentor is idina menzel, who plays shelby corcoran - the coach of vocal adrenaline and rachel berry's birth mother. their homework assignment is lady gaga's bad romance. and after their performance, shelby choose alex as the winner.

their video for this week is we're not gonna take it by the twisted sisters. the concept of this week's video is that the aspirants are the outcasts trying to fit in. setting is the school cafeteria and a rock concert.

here is this week's video:

after the performance, the week's bottom three was revealed. the bottom three (and the songs they performed during the last chance recital) were:

ellis - mack the knife
matheus - gives you hell
mckynleigh - piece of my heart

ellis was in the bottom three due to her negativity and has even caused some conflicts among the cast members. the mentors believe that she does not believe in herself too much. matheus forgot some of his words and got carried away at some parts of the song. he was also advised to embrace his smallness but always walk and act tall and confident. mckynleigh was definitely the best singer among the three but her lack of character and personality brought her to the bottom three.

but in the end, it was ellis' negative attitude that led to her elimination.

next week's focus is on vulnerability.

biggest loser pinoy edition: jm oloris is the 2nd contestant voted off

blue team's jose michael oloris from manila became the 2nd person to be voted off the biggest loser pinoy edition camp. jm, a 32 year old kagawad and fire volumteer from manila, got 4 votes out of the seven members of the blue team after they lost the weigh in.

the blue team members have agreed before that they will vote based on their weight loss. they would only choose between the 2 with the lowest weight loss. unfortunately, they found it hard because their team leader, alan is in the bottom two. so most of them decided to vore based on who they think should go.

alan, edden, joy and larry voted for jm. jm voted for angela and angela voted for larry. eric's vote was not revealed since 4 votes is enough to vote out jm.

during his stay in the camp, jm was able to lose a total of 30 pounds (18 on the first weigh in and 12 on the second weigh in). this accounts to 8.82% of his starting weight. his initial weight is 340lbs and he lefty the camp at 310lbs.

jm will continue to train and try to lose weight. the voted off contestants will be weighed again on the finale and the biggest loser among them will win a prize.

rizal - soon to be honored with the first filipino made microprocessor

a filipino technology firm now aims to honor dr. jose rizal by naming the first filipino made microprocessor:

Soon, ‘Rizal’ will run computers, electronics
By Tarra Quismundo
Philippine Daily Inquirer
1:03 am | Sunday, June 19th, 2011

In an incarnation that can fit on your thumb, “Rizal” will someday run your mobile phone, music player and laptop.

A team of Filipino design engineers has embarked on an ambitious project to create the first all-Filipino made microprocessor, honoring national hero Jose Rizal with an invention that they hope would put the Philippines on the technology map.

Filipino technology firm BiTMICRO Networks Inc. is in the design phase of the Rizal processor, a chip envisioned to become the first commercial all-Filipino made processor that would run a multitude of devices.

“What we’re hoping to do is, once we’re done, we can show a success story. More investors will come to the Philippines and invest. That’s the whole idea. Because then, they would believe that, hey, the Philippines can really do it and they’re capable,” said Rey Bruce, BiTMICRO chair and CEO.

“We want a hero behind our product. Hopefully, we could have a product that will be equally known worldwide,” said the CEO’s nephew, Bobbet Bruce, BiTMICRO vice president for corporate strategy.

Chips are the brains of your everyday electronic device—from computers and smart phones to digital cameras and air-conditioning control panels.

The Rizal processor is the first attempt at developing such a chip for BiTMICRO, a firm that designs and creates customized all-weather computer data storage devices like the solid-state drive (SSD).

More stable and sturdy

Considered more stable than mechanical disc drives found in your typical desktop or net book, the SSD is an industry-grade storage device used in the field by clients like foreign militaries, aircraft maker Boeing and Nasa (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) to withstand different field conditions and varying temperatures.

The firm, established by five Batangas-born Bruce brothers in Silicon Valley in 1995, has made it a tradition to give its products Filipino names, among them, Luneta (Logical Unifier of Extensive Transfer Arrays), and Edsa (Enhanced Datamover and Storage Accelerator.

“The product itself we want to be competitive. We want something that’s a Filipino brand fully made in the Philippines. I think that equally as important as having a branded product is the opportunity that we’re giving our engineers in the Philippines to build this,” Bruce told the Inquirer at the firm’s office at The Fort in Taguig City.

The project is part of BiTMICRO’s initiative to establish a training center that would hone the skills of the country’s engineering students, graduates and professors by providing the actual tools used in the industry that simulate on-the-job experience.

The firm is working with the government, the private sector and top universities on a project envisioned to roll out its first prototype in one year at an estimated minimum cost of $2 million (roughly P90 million) for development and another $2.5 million (roughly P112 million) for fabrication.

Project ‘Team Philippines’

BiTMICRO’s partners include global IT firm Synopsis, US firm Texas Instruments, University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle University, Don Bosco Technical College, Mapua Institute of Technology, Mindanao State University, University of San Carlos and First Asia Institute of Technology and Humanities, among others.

Also taking part in the “Team Philippines” project are the Department of Science and Technology, Congressional Commission on Science and Technology and Engineering, and Department of Trade and Industry.

While the design and development of processors is well advanced around the world, the Philippines has yet to create and patent its own commercially viable chip.
With the continuing development of more powerful devices, the chip market is considered robust as use of the intellectual property costs millions of dollars. For instance, a laptop developer has to pay for licensing and royalties to use a particular processor in his device, said Rey Bruce.

“The processor is a very mature IP (intellectual property). It’s been around ever since the computer started. But there are still some areas where we can probably excel,” he said.
“It has to be better or at least equivalent to those already in existence. We can’t sell something that the others are already selling. We have to be better and affordable, not necessarily cheaper,” said Bruce, who moved the firm’s research and development operations to the Philippines in 2003.

jerzon senador: animal hater?

jerzon senador of calamba laguna bacame the target of criticisms of animal lovers not only in the philippines, but all over the world. this is after he posted this picture of his puppy in his facebook page:

this picture immediately bacame viral and was easily shared through facebook; which caught the attention of animal lovers and activist. this is a clear violation of republic act no. 8485 or the animal welfare act. his wall was posted with several messages criticizing the picture. there is even a hate "fan" page dedicated to him in facebook (

jerzon already posted public apology on his wall several times ( http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001407586026&sk=info ). here are screenshots of 2 of his apology posts:

recently, there was a similar incident that happened. joseph candare, a student of up diliman, described on his blog how he killed a cat. paws, an animal care group, initiated a case against him and he was found guilty. he was convicted by the quezon city trial court. let us wait if the group will also have the same action versus senador.

biggest loser pinoy edition: destiny duarte is eliminated

destiny duarte, a 23 year old customer service representative from cebu city, became the first contestant to be voted off the newest localized reality show, the biggest loser pinoy edition.

destiny was voted off after the red team lost the first elimination weigh in. the blue team lost a total of 130lbs or 6.70% of their total weight. on the other hand, the red team lost a total of 132lbs but this is only equivalent to 6.32% of their total weight. larry of the blue team was also declared as the biggest loser of the wee after 26lbs or 10.2% of his weight.

destiny voted for hazel but she got 4 votes (from eboy, hazel, raffy and winwin). this is enough for her to be eliminated. the votes of art and ryan were not revealed. the main reason why destiny was voted off was her team mates considered that she already had an injury and she needs to rest. and also due to the ankle injury, she might not give her all during the training.

destiny lost only 10lbs or 4.52% of her total weight, the second lowest among the contestants (hazel got the lowest weight lost, with 8lbs or 3.88% weight loss)

destiny will continue to train at home and try to lose weight. in the american version, the eliminated contestants also train at home and are weighed in at the finale. the eliminated contestant with the highest percentage of weight loss wins a prize. this might also be adapted by the show.
